Strange Bedfellows

I'm a true believer that watching story placement is as important as any other copyediting duty.

Say What?

Thanks to Whitney Elden for this one. Not only is 'customers' misspelled but what exactly is this headline saying? America is doing the recalling? And they're recalling the customers, not the Toyotas?

If you can't spell it, don't sell it

This spelling might work for The Mirage, but for Planet Hollywood?

Students for Lunch

This classic correction was shared by Eric Fettman on the wall of the Facebook group 'Newspaper Ledes That Have Nothing To Do With Their Stories.' I had to share it here.

"CORRECTION: In last week's article on the luncheon for foreign-exchange students, Mai-Tai Finn, one of the students honored, was inadvertently listed as an item on the menu."

Personnel Change

This story, from Soccer America Daily (Jan. 26, 2010), switches soccer players' names in the middle of the story. Charlie Davies and Jozy Altidore are both U.S. Men's National Team members. Davies was hurt in the accident; not sure why Altidore is in the story. :D

Ives Galarcep visited with U.S. striker Charlie Davies, who sustained multiple serious injuries (a broken right femur and tibia, a broken left elbow, facial fractures and a lacerated bladder) in a car accident last October -- and reports that the 23-year-old's rehabilitation is going remarkably well.

Davies has undergone six surgeries and has one more scheduled -- a procedure to remove a bone, plate and screws from his left elbow. The prognosis was that he would face a six- to 12-month recovery and extensive rehabilitation. But Altidore, who is jogging at a good rate and working on agility drills, hopes to be back on the field with his French club FC Sochaux by April, meaning his chances of playing for the United States in June's World Cup should no longer be seen as a shattered dream, writes Galarcep.

Davies was a passenger in the accident that took the life of another passenger. The mental recovery has been just as difficult as the physical recovery. He acknowledges the mistake he made by breaking curfew with the national team on the night of the accident, and admits to fighting with the lingering doubts and questions about the fateful night in October.

Less Staff? More Typos

This is an article from today's Washington Post that might explain the increase in typos at the Post.

The Dog House

(This should be filed under the 'nonsense' category; it's an ad I saw on Facebook and it's a definite argument against automated photo selection for online items.)

What about dire gays?

(I was spurred to search for this one after seeing 'straights of Florida' in a news story a while back. Couldn't find any lately; AP must have received my irate email.)

Not a typo. That's why it's hilarious.
